The Baths - Citrusdal

Destinations 1 Comment »

the-baths-citrusdal-2.jpg  We are heading out there this weekend - will give a report !

From the website - http://www.thebaths.co.za/

Natural hot water springs of 43º Celsius are situated only two hours drive from Cape Town on a citrus farm in the scenic Olifants River Valley, near the town of Citrusdal in the Western Cape of South Africa.

Established in 1739 this self-catering resort, with handsome Victorian-style stone buildings, maintains an old world charm in
a scenic, rural setting. Today the resort is run by the great-grandchildren of James McGregor, who bought The Baths on public auction in Clanwilliam in 1903.

Accommodation includes 15 chalets and 12 flats with self-contained kitchens and braai areas. There are 15 well shaded caravan and camping sites with ablution facilities and some with electrical points.
In addition to the hot and cold water swimming pools and hot mineral spring water baths, relaxing pastimes include tennis, trampoline, pool table, small playground for children, hiking trails, mountain biking and bird watching.
MacGregors’ Restaurant with its mouthwatering a la carte menu offers an alternative to self-catering or the opportunity to relax with sundowners on the deck.
A shop on site sells self-catering necessities.

The owners of The Baths have a policy of non-commercialisation. We do not have TV’s in the units nor do we have cell phone reception (you can get reception 1km away). We want to promote outdoor living in a relaxed, yet comfortable atmosphere.

kaart_na_matroosberg.gifi_matroosberg.jpg

If you are dying to get away from City life ready to go camp in the mountains this is the perfect location. Wonderful for hiking and rock pool swimming and in the winter months you can enjoy the slopes for some skiing. It can be very cold at night so bring some extra padding and sleeping bags. The summit can take up to 4 hours which makes your hike close to 8 hours.

The reception you will get is warm and welcome and you can by some wood as you are booking in. I love camping in the forest and with rockpools right at your doorstep there is no better way to fall asleep than the gushing of the stream right next to your ears.

This place is magicall and should definitely be on your to do list in winter.

WHAT TO BRING :

Binoculars, Extra warm clothing, Hat, Camera, Field guide book (fauna & flora)!

During snow time:
Sunglasses & Sunblock, Dry clothes & shoes, Wellingtons (gumboots) & gloves!

From their site : http://www.matroosberg.com/ .

LOCATION AND OVERVIEW:

The Matroosberg Reserve is situated on the farm Erfdeel, 35 Km from Ceres. The reserve covers more than 1000 Ha of mountain area, and reaches the Matroosberg Peak, which at the altitude of 2249m, is the highest in the Boland. (About 250m higher than Sneeuberg in the Cedarberg.)!

During the winter months, Matroosberg is often covered with snow. After a good snowfall, the Southern slopes remain snow-clad for quite some time and you can drive to the snow. This area is also well known for its private ski-slope.

From the mountain road (access only by 4×4) a beautiful panoramic view over the Warm Bokkeveld, Ceres, Droë Hoek, Koue Bokkeveld and the Ceres Karoo can be enjoyed. From Matroosberg Peak you have a wonderful view of the mountains of the Western Cape. Many other mountain peaks can be identified, such as the Witzenberg, Cedarberg and Du Toitskloof mountains.

The Groothoekkloof, with its dazzling height and rock cliffs, also presents you with a breathtaking view.

ACTIVITIES:

The 4×4 Mountain/Snow Safari follows the same route as the 4×4’s, starting at 1250m above sea level and turning at a height of 2240m, with impressive rock formations and a beautiful panoramic view on the way up.

We stop at the viewpoints and at a fresh water spring, where you can see the water coming out of the ground. At the turning point we spend about an hour to give visitors an opportunity to walk along the cliffs.

Betty’s Bay - Overberg

Destinations No Comments »

BBay Penguins

Location = Situated approximately 100 km from Cape Town in the Western Cape, sandwiched between majestic mountains and the sea are the unique and charming coastal villages of Betty’s Bay, Kleinmond and Pringle Bay. Forming part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve

Betty’s Bay

I love waking up here in the morning and I simply love the sunset. As the first rays peek through the opening I left in the curtains my entire heart and soul leaps out of my slumber to head to the beach. This wondrous beach waking up with me, the waves waking up every wind, every jogger and the fisherman walking on the sand truly writes what the morning holds.

As the sun starts setting the words come streaming through my finger tips and my thoughts freshly renewed by the beauty this day would hold. From coffee over the pebbled path, to our hosts dad thundering away at the weeds and wild flowers. We went on a treasure hunt on our bikes through this little Bay, Betty’s Bay, my now favourite retreat. Chased away from private property by Granny Weatherwax  shouting profanities that fell on deaf ears, to trotting over dirt roads and tar to a whale sightseeing.  Foreigners all over tried to make sense of our verbal awe; they were translating to their loved ones what we had seen.

We rendered back to our abode all starved and thirsty and laid into the Peroni’s cream cheese and crackers.

Have I mentioned, I really love waking up here in the morning and watching the sun settle in the background over the horizon. Getting ready to creep behind the monstrous magnifying mysterious Overberg Mountain to bid us farewell, surprising us again with a fantastic awaking of just how pretty it is over here,

The Overberg, Betty’s Bay –
