Great for Sunday movie watching, it was a real treat and the technology in the movie is truly fabulous. Predictable but fun.

Tony Stark is the complete playboy who also happens to be an engineering genius. While in Afghanistan demonstrating a new missile he’s captured and wounded. His captors want him to assemble a missile for them but instead he creates an armored suit and a means to prevent his death from the shrapnel left in his chest by the attack. He uses the armored suit to escape. Back in the U.S. he announces his company will cease making weapons and he begins work on an updated armored suit only to find that Obadiah Stane, his second in command at Stark industries has been selling Stark weapons to the insurgents. He uses his new suit to return to Afghanistan to destroy the arms and then to stop Shane from misusing his research. Written by John Vogel {jlvogel@comcast.net}

What Happens in Vegas

vegas.jpg What happens in Vegas

Great movie in which Cameron’s beauty and fun filled nature gets depicted brilliantly. Complimented by Ashton Kutcher this is a joyous setting and makes us dream a little. With some effort and the basic law of attraction most relationships can work, if we only let be what is meant to happen. Enjoying life being ourselves. Diaz looks phenomenal in the movie and i wish i had her personal trainer on board. She is built like a race horse and any mans dream.

I LOVED THE MOVIE - GO CAMERON.

Set in Sin City, story revolves around two people who discover they’ve gotten married following a night of debauchery, with one of them winning a huge jackpot after playing the other’s quarter. Unhappy pair try to undermine each other and get their hands on the money — falling in love along the way. Written by Marisa_Gabriella

Feeding your Appetites - STEPHEN ARTERBURN

51aghbjrbvl_sl500_bo2204203200_pisitb-dp-500-arrowtopright45-64_ou01_aa240_sh20_.jpg

Really great book about how our appetites can destroy us and keep us captive, we were created with appetites but as humans born into sin these appetites can ruin our lives.

Helps the reader understand our God-given appetites and how to short-circuit out-of-control cravings and achieve lasting change by satisfying natural hungers.Learn to control the things that control you!

http://markdaniels.blogspot.com/2004/12/review-of-feeding-your-appetites-by.html.

The basic thesis of the book, with which I agree, is that “every human being has an inborn desire to know God, but our personal and selfish wants get in the way.” In essence, Arterburn and Cherry tell us, because we can’t see God and because we’d rather not submit to God’s dominion over our lives, we allow God-imitators like money, sex, food, work, and ego–things that we delude ourselves into believing we can control–to become the object of our seeking.

Still busy reading this book, but enjoying it already, from a personal point of view and from personal experience i can really relate to some of these stories.

Mandela vs Bush…This is the joke of the month

Our Fun No Comments »

Mandela was enjoying a hearty breakfast - bacon, eggs, coffee, Croissants, toast, butter, jam, etc. when Bush (chewing gum) sits next to him and starts a conversation:

Bush: ‘You South Africans eat the whole bread?’

Mandela: ‘Of course.’ Bush: (blowing bubbles with his gum) ‘We don’t. In the States, we only eat what’s inside. The crusts we collect in a container, recycle, re-bake them into Croissants and sell them to South Africa.’ Mandela: ‘Oh Really?’

Bush: ‘D’ya eat jam with the bread?’ Mandela: ‘Of course.’

Bush: (chuckling and crackling his gum) ‘We don’t, in the States we eat fresh fruit for breakfast, put all the peels, seeds and leftovers into containers, recycle them into jam and sell it to South Africa.

‘ Mandela: ‘Do you have sex in America?’

Bush: ‘Of course we do.’ Mandela: ‘And what do you do with the condoms?’ Bush: ‘Throw them away of course.

‘ Mandela: ‘We don’t. We pack them into containers, recycle them, melt them down into chewing gum and sell them to America.’

7 Habits To Win In Office Politics

News / Articles 1 Comment »

officepolitics.jpg

Office politics - a taboo word for some people. It’s a pervasive thing at the workplace. In it’s simplest form, office politics is simply about the differences between people at work; differences in opinions, conflicts of interests are often manifested as office politics. It all goes down to human communications and relationships.

There is no need to be afraid of office politics. Top performers are those who have mastered the art of winning in office politics. Below are 7 good habits to help you win at the workplace:

HABIT #1 - BE AWARE YOU HAVE A CHOICE.

The most common reactions to politics at work are either fight or flight. It’s normal human reaction for survival in the wild, back in the prehistoric days when we were still hunter-gatherers. Sure, the office is a modern jungle, but it takes more than just instinctive reactions to win in office politics. Instinctive fight reactions will only cause more resistance to whatever you are trying to achieve; while instinctive flight reactions only label you as a pushover that people can easily take for granted. Neither options are appealing for healthy career growth.

Winning requires you to consciously choose your reactions to the situation. Recognize that no matter how bad the circumstances, you have a choice in choosing how you feel and react. So how do you choose? This bring us to the next point…

HABIT #2 - KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE.

When conflicts happens, it’s very easy to be sucked into tunnel-vision and focus on immediate differences. That’s a self-defeating approach. Chances are you’ll only invite more resistance by focusing on differences in people’s positions or opinions.

The way to mitigate this without looking like you’re fighting to emerge as a winner in this conflict is to focus on the business objectives. In the light of what’s best for the business, discuss the pros and cons of each option. Eventually, everyone wants the business to be successful; if the business don’t win, then nobody in the organization wins. It’s much easier for one to eat the humble pie and back off when they realize the chosen approach is best for the business.

By learning to steer the discussion in this direction, you will learn to disengage from petty differences and position yourself as someone who is interested in getting things done. Your boss will also come to appreciate you as someone who is mature, strategic and can be entrusted with bigger responsibilities.

HABIT #3 - FOCUS ON YOUR CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE.

At work, there are often issues which we have very little control over. It’s not uncommon to find corporate policies, client demands or boss mandates which affects your personal interests. Bitching and complaining are common responses to these events that we cannot control. But think about it, other than that short term emotional outlet, what tangible results do bitching really accomplish? In most instances, none.

Instead of feeling victimized and angry about the situation, focus on the things that you can do to influence the situation - your circle of influence. This is a very empowering technique to overcome the feeling of helplessness. It removes the victimized feeling and also allows others to see you as someone who knows how to operate within given constraints. You may not be able to change or decide on the eventual outcome, but you can walk away knowing that you have done the best within the given circumstances.

Constraints are all around in the workplace; with this approach, your boss will also come to appreciate you as someone who is understanding and positive.

HABIT #4 - DON’T TAKE SIDES.

In office politics, it is possible to find yourself stuck in between two power figures who are at odds with each other. You find yourself being thrown around while they try to outwit each other and defend their own position. All at the expense of you getting the job done. You can’t get them to agree on a common decision for a project, and neither of them want to take ownership of issues; they’re too afraid they’ll get stabbed in the back for any mishaps.

In cases like this, focus on the business objectives and don’t take side with either of them - even if you like one better than the other. Place them on a common communication platform and ensure open communications among all parties so that no one can claim “I didn’t say that”.

By not taking sides, you’ll help to direct conflict resolution in an objective manner. You’ll also build trust with both parties. That’ll help to keep the engagements constructive and focus on business objectives.

HABIT #5 - DON’T GET PERSONAL

In office politics, you’ll get angry with people. It happens. There will be times when you feel the urge to give that person a piece of your mind and teach him a lesson. Don’t.

People tend to remember moments when they were humiliated or insulted. Even if you win this argument and get to feel really good about it for now, you’ll pay the price later when you need help from this person. What goes around comes around, especially at the work place.

To win in the office, you’ll want to build a network of allies which you can tap into. The last thing you want during a crisis or an opportunity is to have someone screw you up because they habour ill-intentions towards you - all because you’d enjoyed a brief moment of emotional outburst at their expense.

Another reason to hold back your temper is your career advancement. Increasingly, organizations are using 360 degree reviews to promote someone.

Even if you are a star performer, your boss will have to fight a political uphill battle if other managers or peers see you as someone who is difficult to work with. The last thing you’ll want is to make it difficult for your boss to champion you for a promotion.

HABIT #6 - SEEK TO UNDERSTAND, BEFORE BEING UNDERSTOOD.

The reason people feel unjustified is because they felt misunderstood. Instinctively, we are more interested in getting the others to understand us than to understand them first. Top people managers and business leaders have learned to suppress this urge.

Surprisingly, seeking to understand is a very disarming technique. Once the other party feels that you understand where he/she is coming from, they will feel less defensive and be open to understand you in return. This sets the stage for open communications to arrive at a solution that both parties can accept. Trying to arrive at a solution without first having this understanding is very difficult - there’s little trust and too much second-guessing.

HABIT #7 - THINK WIN-WIN.

As mentioned upfront, political conflicts happen because of conflicting interests. Perhaps due to our schooling, we are taught that to win, someone else needs to lose. Conversely, we are afraid to let someone else win, because it implies losing for us.

In business and work, that doesn’t have to be the case.

Learn to think in terms of “how can we both win out of this situation?” This requires that you first understand the other party’s perspective and what’s in it for him. Next, understand what’s in it for you. Strive to seek out a resolution that is acceptable and beneficial to both parties. Doing this will ensure that everyone truly commit to the agree resolution and not pay only lip-service to it.

People simply don’t like to lose. You may get away with win-lose tactics once or twice, but very soon, you’ll find yourself without allies in the workplace. Thinking win-win is an enduring strategy that builds allies and help you win in the long term.

You walk in and the people look different to what you are use too. This is a small town and everyone knows everyone and everything. The locals look at you like you are from somewhere else but they make you feel welcome.

You look at the menu with a sour face and you want to walk out when you get your bill and your beer cost you R 7. You think no way am i eating here if things are so cheap imagine what the food must be like. And you have another beer and another and the bill is really cheap. You have settled in nicely now and the atmosphere is so relaxing, so no nonsense. You decide to give the menu a shot and you cannot believe that things are so damn cheap. Something has got to be wrong with the food. You see prawns on the menu and decide not to take the chance. You order the R 65 special. The quarter chicken, two rib racks and sirloin steak will be way to much to eat but you want to see the portions to prove to yourself that something is wrong. The couple next to you order the prawns and your eyes are wide open as you see the delicious steamy prawns pass you. Your order comes and you are amazed that your plate is overflowing, the portions are enormous and the quality fabulous. These people should have a prime spot in every town in South Africa. Their food is absolutely phenomenal and not only does it taste ridiculously good their prices are ridiculously low as well.

Home of the Brave

Home of the Brave.

I can see what they are trying to get across with this movie. But they downplay the destruction America brought upon Iraq. They make Americans the victims. Anyway there is much to say about this movie but i would rather not go there. There were victims on both sides. Innocent inhabitants and soldiers were either killed or their lives changed drastically. There were families that agreed and supported the soldiers and there were family members who detested the war and were angered with the people fighting it.

I think the war sucks, and it should never have happened. But hey what do i know. What do we know of what REALLY happens out there in this world. My opinion SUSH BUCKS.

BUCK FUSH !!!

The day after they get the word they’ll go home in two weeks, a group of soldiers from Spokane are ambushed in an Iraqi city. Back stateside we follow four of them - a surgeon who saw too much, a teacher who’s a single mom and who lost a hand in the ambush, an infantry man whose best friend died that day, and a soldier who keeps reliving the moment he killed a civilian woman. Each of the four has come home changed, each feels dislocation. Group therapy, V.A. services, halting gestures from family and colleagues, and regular flashbacks keep the war front and center in their minds. They’re angry, touchy, and explosive: can a warrior find peace back home? Written by {jhailey@hotmail.com}

AMERICAN GANGSTER

AMERICAN GANSTER. True Story.

Phew, great movie and very long. But it never lost me. The drama and suspense was always lurking and the actors were all phenomenal. Great power gives you great connections and makes drug trafficking easy for you, especially when you are bigger than the mob itself. A must watch.

Following the death of his employer and mentor, Bumpy Johnson, Frank Lucas establishes himself as the number one importer of heroin in the Harlem district of Manhattan. He does so by buying heroin directly from the source in South East Asia and he comes up with a unique way of importing the drugs into the United States. As a result, his product is superior to what is currently available on the street and his prices are lower. His alliance with the New York Mafia ensures his position. It is also the story of a dedicated and honest policeman, Richie Roberts, who heads up a joint narcotics task force with the Federal government. Based on a true story. Written by garykmcd
