main_image.jpg CAFE ORCA

n the beachfront in Melkbosstrand, you will find the most delightful restaurant, situated virtually on the beach! Café Orca has become an institution in the area, specialising in seafood but also offering other choices, all of the highest quality and exceptional value. Café Orca is a fully licenced venue.

After our cycle in Koeberg Nature reserve we headed deurmekaar hare and all to this little cafe on beach. Always busy it is always difficult to find an outdoor table. But the service is phenomenal and the food is truly artwork for your palate.

A definite stop for when you hit this little town.

Koeberg Reserve - Melkbos

Our Fun No Comments »

koeberg.jpg Koeberg Nature Reserve

The area north of Koeberg Power Station was proclaimed a nature reserve in order to protect the diverse range of fauna and flora in the region.

Wel on a Saturday morning woken up by our good physio friend Ros, we jumped out of bed and headed with our bikes to the koeberg nature reserve in Melkbos. It was boiling hot but the trail was filled with wildlife.

You can also view the parachuters coming down from their freefall and then follow their flight.

The sea breeze was very welcoming in the blistering heat. We put our bikes down and went and sat on the beach taking in the fresh air and the beautiful Table Mountain view.

There are hiking trails and offroad trails ranging from 7km to 21km …

So avoid the traffic and head towards the Koeberg Nature Reserve.

J&B Met afterparty - Kennilworth

Our Fun 1 Comment »
logo_met_age.gif 5FM J&B MET OFFICIAL AFTER PARTY 2008

Saturday, 26 January, 18h00
J&B Met Hospitality Village, Kenilworth Racecourse

The J&B Met is the highlight of the Cape Town social calendar and a stomping, rip roaring party follows a day of awesome horseracing, fashion and fun.  The 5FM J&B™ Met Official After Party will take placed at Kenilworth racecourse on Saturday 26 January 2008 from 18h00 until midnight.

The party, located behind the J & B Met hospitality village, sports an open air dance floor with magnificent lighting, VJ graphics and booming, state of the art sound. 5fm’s Roger Goode was performing his Saturday Surgery live from 18h00 – 22h00 followed by 5fm’s DJ Fresh hitting the decks from 22h00 – 23h00.  Cape Town’s DJ Dino Moran ended the night’s festivities. He was truly brilliant

My mates and I went to the Met taking a taxi, thinking it wise as we wanted it to be an all nighter. The party was nothing short of entertaining and the DJ’s were absolutely fantastic. The sound was awesome and the special effects kept us wide eyed. We were shocked though when the lights went on and the music stopped at midnight. The tickets were a R 110 and if we knew the party was only until midnight we would have gone much earlier.

The security was brilliant BUT when the music ended a girl friend and I walked outside to go look for one of our mates. And as we wanted to go back in from the gates we were PUSHED back outside of the gate by one of the security guys. A coloured male screaming at us pushing us back into the road not allowing us to go and fetch our boyfriends and other mates. Luckily our charm wangled our way back in twisting a white young mans arm to let us pass and not be stranded in the road. Now this is not a racial comment on my side but I was treated like a dog and with no respect by this man.

But other than that the party was rocking and the outfits were amazing.

Wakame - Mouille Point

Wakame – Mouille Point

Crowded on a Friday evening, you will wrestle your way through to the bar to get a drink. Staring at the people scattered all over the deck you can sneak a peak at the great view of Robbin Island and the yachts sailing past in the shadow of the sunset. From trendy to foreign to arty. Normality here would make you stand out like a sore thumb.

I have never seen so many boobs and thighs sticking out in my entire life. My boyfriend was gagging and not once but a couple of times did we have to snap him out of his jaw break hanging open totally swallowed by the eye candy.

Other than the vibe and surroundings the Food is absolutely phenomenal. Sushi is an absolute must and the calamari sure needs to be tried. More than once. The buzz and the service were great and the hostess will make the boys loose their seats gawking at her from below the stairs.

Try it –we were a party of 8, married with kids, dating, visiting from JHB and just fresh out of Denmark. We all had a blast and this experience was nothing short of entertaining. The Camps Bay girls come out here to strutt their stuff and if you don’t walk the walk and wear the t-shirt dresses you sure will be reminded of your grey normality.

Helen Zille - Who’s Who in SA

News / Articles 1 Comment »

Helen Zille (3528)

Who is this Helen Zille and can she be a light in these times of political darkness ??

So I reckon after all the corruption, lies and false arrests against the Scorpions it is time for us to start investigating who truly deserves to make decisions in our Country. I for one have never voted as I have never truly had any interest in our Government. But I suppose as I grew up a little and actually started looking at the news and I grew very angry with what I was seeing and reading.

We have so much KAK going on in our Government and I dont get how people can vote for someone that still has a case of corruption against him, barely scraped through rape charges AND THEN TOLD A COUNTRY IN A LETHAL GRIP OF HIV TO TAKE A SHOWER TO GET RID OF THE DISEASE. Come now South Africa, Black White, Coloured Blue and Purple catch a wake up. Do you want these people deciding what happens to your future and country !! This is a mockery of your intelligence.

He is a joke and I cannot believe the ignorance of his followers. Go ahead take a shower and be victorious over this killing machine HIV, vote for this president of yours and lets hope the corruption chareges are also dropped.

Lets see what he will do to your nation, your children and everyones future.

They say love is blind BUT HECK what the hell is this !!!!

Heath Ledger found dead

News / Articles No Comments »

body_wideweb__470x3080.jpg

An autopsy will be carried out on the body of actor Heath Ledger overnight Australian-time, the New York City Police Department says.

A police spokesman this evening said the medical examiner’s office would conduct the autopsy between 9am and 5pm (1am and 9am AEDT). Police have confirmed that sleeping pills were discovered near the body of Ledger, 28, when he was found dead in a Manhattan apartment today.

New York Police Department deputy commissioner Paul Browne said the Oscar-nominated Australian actor’s body was found naked and face-down on the floor of his bedroom by a housekeeper about 3.30pm Tuesday (7.30am Melbourne time). ”There were pills within the vicinity of the bed,” Mr Browne said. But he stressed that pills were not scattered around Ledger’s body, as had been previously reported. “There were some prescription medications that included sleeping pills,” he said.

The 28-year-old actor, who had reportedly been ill with pneumonia, had an appointment for a massage at the apartment, which is believed to be his home in Soho in Manhattan. The housekeeper went to tell Ledger the masseuse had arrived and found him naked and unconscious at the foot of his bed.

Ledger’s former fiancee, Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams - the mother of his two-year-daughter Matilda - was reported to be ”devastated” by his death and had boarded a flight to New York. Representatives of the actor’s family said police had advised them his death was accidental, the TMZ.com website reported.

The site said representatives had made contact to say Ledger’s family was particularly distraught over media speculation that he may have taken his own life. He was not that kind of person, the family said.

Ledger’s Californian attorney, John LaViolette, could not be contacted this morning. A spokeswoman at his office said he was currently on a plane. “I’m sorry, we can’t talk about this now, we’re too upset,” she said, before ending the phone call.

Ledger’s death comes during the making of his latest film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, directed by Terry Gilliam and in which he was to star alongside Christopher Plummer and Tom Waits. Ledger was an Oscar nominee for his role in Brokeback Mountain and had numerous other screen credits.

SA film breaks silence on female circumcision

SA film breaks silence on female circumcision PDF Print E-mail

A new South African short film, “Cutting Silence”, has been selected to appear at the Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) in Los Angeles in February, reports screenafrica.com.

Cinema Humaine / www.cinemahumain.com

Written and directed by Reina-Marie Loader and produced by Kit Reynolds of International Radio Pictures, the 29-minute film looks at the traditional but highly controversial practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in North African countries.Loader was inspired to make a film about FGM after reading Waris Dirie’s “Desert Flower”. “I was so impressed by Ms Dirie’s courage as an African woman who chose to speak up against what has been done to her as a child in the name of tradition,” says Loader.

Set in Somalia, the fact-based film explores the dilemma of a family on the eve of their daughter’s planned circumcision. A mother’s vivid memories of her own brutal and traumatic experience begin to cast doubt in her mind while her daughter prepares for the rite of passage that is demanded by their community and ensures social acceptance.

The film was entirely shot in South Africa with a local crew and cast. “We built an entire Somalian village in Irene, just outside of Johannesburg,” says Reynolds.

The purpose of the film “is to restore an awareness of the plight of women in these communities. We want to make people aware of the fact that what is happening doesn’t need to happen. This brutality can be offset by a symbolic ceremony,” Reynolds says.

In a process known as infabulation “everything is cut away and the girl is stitched up, leaving a small gap for urination and menses - all this without any kind of anesthetic,” says Reynolds. “Eventually when the girl gets married, her husband either cuts or tears her open for intercourse.”

“I am delighted that the film was selected for the Pan African Film Festival. Festivals such as PAFF represent the notion that film can play a role in combating these injustices or ensuring that they are never forgotten and repeated,” says Loader.

“I hope the audience will realize that what the film represents is the truth. It is something that is happening now with real physical and psychological consequences - perhaps not for men, but most certainly for the women,” she adds.

The Pan African Film Festival is attended by over 200 00 people and presents 175 quality films from across the world, showcasing the diversity and complexity of people of African descent.

The festival was started in 1992 and has been instrumental in promoting works of creative expression that uphold cultural and racial tolerance and education. Past festival features have included award winning films such as “Ray” and South African Oscar-winning film, “Tsotsi”.

SA Adventurers make history

News / Articles No Comments »

vilane_harris.jpg www.sagoodnews.co.za

Two South Africans made history on Thursday when they became the first team to walk unsupported and unassisted to the South Pole.

“They did make it. It’s just divine,” Nadia Harris, wife of one of the pioneers, told Sapa yesterday.

Alex Harris and Sibusiso Vilane’s expedition started in November last year. It saw them covering almost 1200 kilometres in temperatures ranging from 8 degree Celsius to about minus 40 degree Celsius.

Nadia Harris of Johannesburg said she received a brief phone call confirming the pair’s feat.

Harris’ online journal entry from yesterday reads: “17 January 2008 day 65. the lord is faithful! at 1pm chilean time, alex harris and sibusiso vilane arrived at the south pole after 1113km.it is done! Praise the lord!

Both men pulled sleds weighing about 130 kilograms with their supplies during the journey.
They did it all themselves with no support teams putting out food or rigging up tents and not using wind power or sled dogs to get there.

“It’s the purest form of getting to the South Pole,” said Harris when they set off last year.

Vilane said reaching the South Pole was his personal ambition and he wanted to fulfil his personal goal and “inspire other black Africans”.

The two veterans of extreme adventures can now add another success to their list of incredible achievements. In 1996 Harris became the youngest person ever, at the age of 25, to lead an expedition to Mount Everest. Vilane’s first quest into the Himalayas made him the first black person in the world to conquer Everest when he reached the summit on the 26th of May 2003.

Nadia said the two were scheduled to return home next week.
